On the 16th (Korean time), MLB.com, the official homepage of the Major League Baseball (MLB), announced, “It is unclear whether Strasburg will join spring camp.” According to the media, while pitching in the bullpen, Strasburg felt a recurrence of nervous system problems that had plagued him in recent years and stopped pitching.

Washington coach Dave Martinez lamented, saying, “Strasburg did not recover to the extent expected. I know how hard he prepared.”

Strasburg planned to focus on treatment and rehabilitation rather than participating in formal spring training with other players. Washington players started training camp in West Palm Beach, Florida, USA, but he stayed in Washington.

Strasburg is the only franchise star left in Washington. Since his college days, he was a big prospect who was praised for being in the Hall of Fame in the future. Washington selected Strasburg 1st overall in the 2009 draft, and he has been a key starter for the team since 2012, although not as much as expected.

In particular, his performance in 2019, when he won his first championship, was outstanding. Strasburg recorded 18-6 with an ERA of 3.32 that year, and in the postseason won the World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) with 5 wins and 1.98 ERA in 6 games.

Washington also treated the franchise star, the first contributor to the championship. After the season, the club signed a large contract with him for 7 years and a total of 245 million dollars (approximately 314.7 billion won). It was the record for the most money by a pitcher before the signing of Gerrit Cole (9 years, $325 million).

However, after that, a series of injuries led to a complete decline. In 2020, the first year of his contract, he started only 2 games due to wrist pain. In 2021, he played only 5 games due to shoulder and neck injuries, and then underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome and spent an additional year in rehabilitation. He returned after rehabilitation only in June of last year, but the season ended after starting only one game due to a nervous system problem in the same area again.

Strasburg promised to revive this season as he completed a long rehabilitation. In fact, his first bullpen pitch wasn’t bad either. However, as he felt pain from his second bullpen pitch, a red light came on for his health this season.
